The coating and manufacturing industries generate millions of drums annually. The end users & contractors are faced with the disposal of these drums after usage. Environmental and health issues have restricted the disposal process - empty drums cannot be taken to land fill areas. Recycle companies may only take clean drums and metal salvage yards will seldom accept drums because of possible contamination problems or fire hazards. The cost of removal from the jobsite & manufacturing plants is very costly and time consuming. Typically these empty drums are bulky and have to be handled numerous times and then secured for transport. The industry has had electric and hydraulic stationary crushers for years, which are floor mounted. The drums have to be transported from the jobsite to the warehouse or yard where the stationary crusher is located.
Now there is a quick, safe, inexpensive way to crush & dispose of these drums. The Texas Crusher (Protected by U.S. Patent No. 7,069,848) is a new piece of equipment designed to attach to a 5,000 to 12,000 lb. forklift. Two stud plates are welded to the outside of the forklift mast. The head unit is raised by the forklift and set on the hanging brackets and bolted tight. Forklift masts may vary in width, so the unit is designed to adjust to different widths. After the head is in place, the drum is placed on the base-plate and forks. The operator then simply lifts the forks and with full-up pressure the 55-gallon drum will collapse and fold into itself to a height of 8-10 inches. Five crushed drums can take the place of one full size drum. On impact the drum is punctured and held in place by a shear shaft, secured on the underside of the top-plate. The puncture point also releases air trapped inside the drum which takes pressure off the collapsing drum. This is a quick and safe procedure. Typically a two-man crew is used - one operator and one person loading and unloading the drums. The crushed and punctured drums can be loaded into a metal salvage container and sold for cash. These same drums can be safely disposed of in trash bins or land fills. Because they are crushed, the recyclers know the drums are empty and safe. The time frame from loading to completely crushed and lowered is approximately 5-10 seconds depending on the type of forklift used. When the crushing application is completed the top-plate and head can be unbolted and lowered by the forklift to be set aside until needed again. Advantages of the Texas Crusher are:
